Executive Director’s Report cont.

Literacy continues to be a critical priority and, through support from Councilman Joel Rivera and funding from the New York City Council, we expanded and enhanced the adult literacy programs at our West Farms Technology and Career Center in the Bronx. By hiring additional teachers, we were able to offer a fuller range of classes and also extend the Center’s evening and weekend hours. The result was a significant increase in participation and more students meeting the requirements to enroll in our GED program. We also created a Family Literacy program at our Beacon School with generous funding from the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) under an immigration initiative spearheaded by the New York Times Foundation, the Altman Foundation, and the Literacy Assistance Center.
