on Winning Team for “Green” Housing in the Bronx cont.
Phipps Houses, along with Grimshaw Architects, Dattner
Architects and the Jonathan Rose Companies, were the winning team
for the design of Via Verde, a 202-apartment mixed-income complex.
The competition, sponsored by the New York chapter of the American
Institute of Architects (AIANY) and HPD, challenged architects and
developers to design a mixed-use project that provides affordable
housing and community-centered services designed around a theme
of healthy living. The project site, a vacant 60,000 square-foot
lot at 156th Street and Brook Avenue in the Bronx, was condemned
by the city in a 1972 urban renewal program.
